Whyte & MacKay, Invergordon, Scotland

GS Foam Concrete was contracted by Briggs of Burton to carry out works to infill the void between the concrete plinth and the underside of the internal tank floor at Whyte & MacKay, Invergordon, Scotland. The project involved infilling 26 tank bases over a two-week period using our P1150 foamed material at 900 kg/m³ dry density, achieving a 28-day compressive strength of 4N/mm2.
Prior to commencement, we visited the site to establish a suitable methodology and ensure each tank was fitted with the correct inlet attachment for pumping the foamed material into the voids. Using our SP25 trailer-mounted pump and 50 mm flexible hoses, we placed a total of 110 m³ of material over nine days.

50mm inlet pipe

The 50mm inlet pipe was positioned below the vent pipe to allow air to escape before foamed material appeared at the vent. The material was pumped slowly to avoid lifting the internal tank floor. The slow pumping speed was critical, as any distortion in the floor shape or angle would render the tank useless.
Some tanks were completed in two layers. In these cases, the first pour was stopped at the inlet level, and the pipe was cleaned out for reconnection the following day. The second pour continued until material was visible at the vent. We have completed countless tank base infills over the years and all have had their own challenges that we have had to overcome.
